Produce minimal amount of goods, often my only industry is farming and maybe some books. My longest forts have been 20-15 years, and they have all maintained 80-120 fps. I get usually a solid 150-100 fps with 60-80 dwarves on my 5th year. I suspect that any odd-width hallway can have this though place a line of high priority on the edges, and every other tile until the center. This sort of designation has kept forts well above 30 FPS for me, even with open caverns on multiple levels and many wide open rooms.Įxtending it to wider hallways requires some thinking about the logic which I haven't gone through yet. The net effect of this is that, given a sufficiently long hall, most dwarves on each side of the hall will be moving in the same direction, negating the FPS cost from paths being recalculated due to collision. That dwarf then has a chance to path onto the other side of the hall. When two dwarves run into each other, one of the dwarves will end up getting pushed out to the middle of the hall. The dwarves will favor the sides of the hallway to the center, as expected. The best example for this is a 3-wide hall. Something (which I stole from somebody many months ago) which works for me is to designate the edges of hallways as high priority. Even in thick hallways, chances are the "shortest path" is going to be along one edge of it and everyone is going to keep trying to walk back into that shorter edge. If your fort is full of thin hallways, this will happen very frequently. One of the biggest problems with dwarven pathing isn't just the need to check blocks radially until the destination is found it's that whenever two dwarves "bump" into each other in a crowded hallway, they rerun their entire pathing calculation to get by.
